Popularized as daily wear for the working class of Japan, Indigo-dyed Kasuri Kimonos were first introduced to Japan via the Ryukyu Kingdom. This was a period in Japanese history (1429-1879) when the islands of Okinawa were occupied by the Chinese Ming dynasty and many elements of Chinese culture were introduced to Japan. The art of weaving fabric with the iconic indigo blue and white yarn patterns spread through Japan, with different regions each developing their own unique pattern of Kasuri dyeing.
For this Midare Sashiko collection, SDA have developed a variant of Kasuri known as “Ranre-Kasuri”, woven from uneven slub yarns to epitomize the texture of this traditional Japanese textile.
